Old-Fashioned Ginger Molasses Cookies

3/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
sugar for rolling

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, vanilla, and molasses. Combine the dry ingredients and gradually add to the shortening mixture. Chill for an hour. Shape into 1-1/2-inch balls. Roll each ball in granulated sugar and bake about 8 to 10 minutes at 400 degrees. Makes about 4 dozen.
