Dr. Ann Crowley presents a historical and culinary journey through seventeen countries and thirty-three farmers’ markets in this delightful new book, both a cookbook and a travelogue.

The cookbook contains one hundred seventy tantalizing recipes that Crowley developed and tested using the freshest foods from the farmers’ markets she visited. The recipes include all categories of foods, from appetizers to desserts. Included are such traditional recipes as Irish soda bread from Ireland, flatbread from Finland, borscht from Russia, and paella from Spain, as well as dozens of other classics and new recipes.

Full-color photographs accompany the recipes, along with colorful pictures of farmers’ markets in Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Finland), the British Isles (England, Scotland, Ireland), Germany, Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Russia, and Greece.

The author also reflects on the cultural role farmers’ markets play in those countries and the produce——and personalities——that distinguish them.

Crowley, a registered dietitian and commercial food photographer, has published four cookbooks. She is a former associate professor at the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa and the former director of nutrition services for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She also wrote a weekly food and nutrition column for newspapers throughout the Midwest for thirty-two years.
