Vilhelm Moberg’s four-volume emigrant novels have been reissued in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the beginning of Swedish mass immigration to North America.
This volume portrays the family of Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson, prospering in the midst of Minnesota’s growing Swedish community in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Years of toil have brought them a comfortable house and a thriving farm. Now they face a terrible new challenge as Minnesota struggles through the Civil War and the Dakota War.
The family remains together through wartime turmoil. Kristina finally tastes the first apple ripened on the tree grown from a sent from Sweden. Like her family, the tree has taken root and thrived in the new land.
