The Amanas: A Photographic Journey 1959-1999

For almost a half century, Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret, publisher of Penfield Books, has photographed the people, events, and treasures of the Amana Colonies in Iowa.

This collection includes more than one hundred historic black-and-white photos plus 12 pages of color pictures showing the beautiful Amana villages and people.

The Amanas once were a communal society, one of the longest lasting in America. The earliest image, taken in 1959, shows workers eating lunch at the Colony Inn restaurant. Color images show tulips and trees blooming in South Amana, along with the Colonies Maifests and Oktoberfests.
